Discussion 6

Prompt #1:

There are three sub-prompts here:

What is your BHAG?

To move beyond the familiar elements in my life in order to better realize the ambitions of my true purpose. That purpose is not driven or defined by monetary success or titles of prestige, but instead are founded in my ability to improve the condition of the world around me and those individuals who inhabit it.

Please also provide a vivid description of life “the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized. (Take a look at the “Teaching Company” example in the Week 5 PPT presentation cited above.)

In ten years, I aspire to have moved away from the hustle and bustle of big city living, and will have instead made a home for myself somewhere in the Midwestern United States. Here, I can more easily focus on my true ambitions without having to navigate or conform to the popular culture of the modern metropolis. I plan to pursue a career that gives back to the community in which I live and have recently realized that the answer may rest in volunteerism and home development for those in need. Ideally I will be serving as a leader or founding member of an organization that provides such housing. This is not a field that I have any experience in, and it will certainly require me to expand my level of comfort and knowledge.

How does your BHAG align with your purpose and mission?

This BHAG aligns with my purpose and mission on a couple of different levels. It challenges me to constantly develop as an individual. While my goal would be to act as a leader, it would be critical that I am able to learn from people more knowledgeable than myself. Working in this kind of organization would deliver intrinsic value to me that would have previously been reflected in a struggle for hierarchal promotions. Because I would be satisfying my core need to serve others, I would feel more empowered to focus on contribution rather than advancement (not always related elements of the corporate structure). And, being in an organization built around personal value instead of monetary gain would support a better work/life balance for me. I wouldn’t necessarily be obligated to maximize the profitability of every single moment and could feel comfortable taking time for myself and my family. However, while at work, I would be able to provide value to others through my years of experience in team leadership. In return, I might be able to develop future leaders who share my core values and who might also share their values with me.

Prompt #2:

This collage of images represents some of the core elements of my BHAG. It includes reference to my current journey through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan and courses with ASU. It also identifies elements of the future through images of what my life might incorporate through work and personal development. And, perhaps most importantly, it recognizes the critical need for aspiration, hard work, and ongoing leadership courage.
